The Chainsmokers is an American DJ/production music-making phenomenon comprised of Alex Pall and Andrew Taggart. The EDM-pop duo bolted into worldwide fame with “#Selfie” in 2014, which hit the top twenty single mark in several countries.
With the release of their new album Taggart and Pall are pushing the boundaries for themselves in an effort to make a sound that is uniquely theirs. They are trying to ensure that they put themselves into all of their work. Unlike many DJs they don’t want to leave the singing and the lyrics entirely up to someone else.
Pall says that he knew growing up that DJ was his thing, but that fact that he had to dedicate time to studying who was making the hits and what was working for other people means that as a starter you have to go with what you know worked for other people. Pall says that after he met Taggart they spent lots of time trying to make sure that their music would not only combine the elements that other successful artists had, but that they could infuse their music with a unique element that would make sure that they would stand out. The fact that people relate to their music on a deeper level is important to them, Andrew Taggart and Alex Pall always strive to ensure that they are making music that has that relatable quality. He says that they try not to lose track of the fact that it is not just a job, but it has to be personal to them if they want to keep standing out.
Pall and Taggart say that the key to keeping their individuality in their music was due in part to their decision to write and sing in their own songs. They pushed the boundaries of their DJ identity to make sure that their music reflected that identity. The decision that to write relatable songs they could write about their literal experiences has definitely paid off. They credit that decision with increasing their popularity. “It’s becoming more international, which is really exciting for us.” as Pall says.
