Lacey and Larkin still fighting for leaders to respect the First Amendment

Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin are human and civil rights activists from Arizona. The two have been in the fore front in condemning acts of discrimination that are planned and executed mainly by people who are in position s of power. An issue that they have followed up keenly is the First Amendment.

In the line of journalism. They encountered challenges where their right to express themselves was being put to the test by politicians who thought they were going against the law when publishing some stories. One popular case that they had to deal with while they were in active journalists through the Phoenix New Times was the case involving the Former Sheriff of Maricopa County, Joe Arpaio. Arpaio was a sheriff who used to rule with an iron fist.

His approach towards the issue of immigration caused an uproar in Arizona. He would engage in blatant acts of human and civil rights violations. He was a racist who believed that immigrants did not deserve space to live in the country peacefully. Joe Arpaio and President Trump share a lot in common when it comes to this matter, both of them think that immigrants need to be punished for being in the United States without documentation. They have cooperated in a number of times when pushing their anti-immigration campaign. When Joe Arpaio was convicted for racial profiling, he was given a court pardon by President Trump.

The administration of Donald Trump has shown that it is not ready to give people the right to express themselves freely and cases of First Amendment are likely to be many. In fact, the decision taken by Lacey and Larkin to start the Front Page Confidential is a step in the right direction towards stopping violation of the First Amendment laws.

Lacey and Larkin were arrested in 2007 on allegations of publishing a story that they should not have. Joe Arpaio was accusing them of revealing the contents of a grand jury which had given the sheriff permission to search the Phoenix New Times.

The move was against the law, and even if it was coming from a grand jury, the orders which were being given were against the freedom of the media. What even came out later was that the subpoena was fake and could not stand.
