It was an eventful week on the charts for Hip-Hop and R&B with Alicia Keys continuing to prove that “No One” can keep her from breaking records, Mary J. Blige hitting the board at No. 2 and Lupe Fiasco and Chingy making noteworthy debuts.
Alicia Keys’ As I Am slipped to No. 3 on the charts, even with an incredible 62% sales jump. The monster release went double platinum in just six weeks, selling 474,000 copies and 2,350,000 units overall. The songstress beat out Kanye West who’s Graduation album sold only 1,848,500 discs after 15 weeks.
Queen of Hip-Hop Soul Mary J. had the only debut album to crack the top 10. The star’s ninth album, Growing Pains sold 629,000 copies, according to Nielsen’s SoundScan, for the No. 2 spot.
Jaheim debuted this week with his first release under Atlantic, The Makings of a Man. The album moved 176,000 units at No. 11.
Lupe’s sophomore effort Lupe Fiasco’s The Cool took No. 15 with 143,000 sales
Hate It or Love It, Chingy debuted at No. 84 this week, moving 31,450 units.
The year is almost over and all the big cds we were waiting for are now out, or we already have listened to them. Therefore it is time to decide who had the best rap album and the best r&b album.
I picked five cds for each genre and 3 notable mentions.
The 3 Rap Cds That Almost Made

The 3 R&B Cds That Almost Made

Definitely Lupe Fiasco and Kanye West are my top rap cds this year, Jay-Z is right behind with his already classic American gangster, Common’s Finding Forever and Styles P’s Super Gangster are great cds too.
Bone Thugs was a good suprise, i wasn’t expecting it to be as good as it actually is.
Consequence cd is the sleptest cd of the year, nobody mention it anywhere but if you didnt hear it, do it because it’s worth it. And Ghostface? Well it’s Ghost, and The Big Doe Rehab is hot and you cant be wrong with him.
Chrisette Michele is a step ahead of every other cd that came out this year. I love it from the beginning to the end, every track, every beat, every lyric, it’s a mix of soul, jazz, funk, hip-hop and of course r&b. If you didnt yet, rush to the store and buy it, you will love it like i do i promise.
Right behind i pick Alicia Keys and her As I Am, i was expecting a little more from this cd but you know it’s Alicia and even the half of what she does is better than what anyone else put out.
Lloyd cd is great too, the right mix of uptempo tracks and soulful ballads.
Trey Songz has been a beautiful suprise, the track Can’t Help But Wait is still on top of my iPod playlist.
The final cd is Joe: he never fails in my opinion.
A cd that almost made the top 5 is Sean Kingston, another good surprise, i thought he was one hit wonder with his summer jam Beautiful Girl, but he delivered a solid album mix of rap, r&b and raggae, with the productions of JR Rotem.
The ballad track Bed introduced me to J. Holiday and his Back Of My Lac that is a good cd of course.
Chris Brown however disappointed me a little bit, the first two singles were good but in the cd there are, in my opinion, too many fillers, and his debut cd was way much better, but anyway Exclusive is better than most of the cd this year.
These are my picks for 2007, what do you think? Do you agree or disagree? And what are YOUR picks? Make your list and post a comment, we will share our thoughts and probably we will fight a little!
