After failing a number of drug tests over the past month, Beanie Sigel has been sentenced to three months in jail for violating the terms of his supervised release.
According to the Philadelphia Daily News, the Broad Street Bully gave a fake urine sample to authorities on February 29 and tested positive for a number of drugs, including Xanax and Percocet. U.S. District Judge R. Barclay Surrick on Friday (March 29) ordered that the rapper be taken into custody immediately. In January, Surrick sent Sigel to jail for one day and extended his probation by 18 months, with the first six months to be served in a halfway house, after he took an unapproved trip to Atlantic City.
Beans told Surrick that he is an addict and that he “had a relapse” while at the halfway house. The troubled MC cited his dire financial situation as a contributing factor. He explained to Surrick that, because of the strict terms of his probation, he was unable to properly promote his last album, The Solution.
“I’m losing everything because of this situation,” he told the judge. When asked about income from sales of the CD, the rapper explained that he “gets 14 cents on the dollar for every CD that is sold, and that is only after the record companies get their money off the top.”
Damn, dude got a real problem and wtf is only 14 cents for a cd? Who gets the rest? The label? And then they go against us cause we leak the cds. Fuck them!
Despite allegations by former Roc-A-Fella artist Peedi Crakk, Def Jam has not dropped Beanie Sigel and Freeway from its roster.
According to Peedi, he was called into a Philly studio along with State Property cohorts Beanie Sigel and Freeway and told by a Def Jam A&R that they’d been dropped.
But Beanie Sigel’s manager, Mark Byers, told Billboard that Beanie and Freeway still call Roc-A-Fella home.
“Beans and Freeway didn’t get dropped,” Byers said. “I just got off the phone with L.A. Reid talking about the next video for ‘Rain’ featuring Raheem DeVaughn that we’re about to release. We’re re-launching Beanie’s project and releasing a ‘Rain’ remix with State Property.”
Roc-A-Fella is an imprint on Def Jam that began to dissolve when founders Jay-Z, Damon Dash and Kareem Burke went their separate ways in 2004. Jay-Z later took the position of president of Def Jam, and Roc-A-Fella artists have complained about getting little attention under Jay’s watch.
In related news, the entire State Property camp, including Beanie Sigel, Freeway, Oschino and Sparks, the Young Gunz and Peedi Crakk, are currently preparing a reunion album to be released later this year. According to Billboard it will most likely be released by this summer.
Beanie Sigel was sentenced to one day in federal prison on Wednesday (January 9) for a violation of his probation.
According to the Associated Press, U.S. District Judge R. Barclay Surrick handed down the sentence and also extended the rapper’s probation by 18 months after Beans took an unauthorized trip to Atlantic City and made contact with a convicted felon. The first six months of the extended probation will be served in a halfway house, which will severely limit his ability to travel or promote his new album, The Solution. Although Beanie has recently made an effort to portray himself as a changed man, Judge Surrick explained that he needed to show that through his actions.
The MC recently shot an anti-violence PSA and joined outspoken comedian Bill Cosby for a peace march in his hometown of Philadelphia. “If they’re looking at you as a role model, you’ve got to do the right thing,” Surrick told Beanie. In 2005, the Rocafella artist served a year in federal prison on a gun conviction.
There were no monster debuts this week, but a slew of hip-hop and R&B albums made an impression on the charts during the pre-Christmas rush.
Bow Wow & Omarion scored this week’s highest debut with their collabo album, Face Off, which landed at No. 11 and moved 107,000 copies in its first week out, according to Billboard.
Birdman has been in some legal trouble as of late, but his rap game seems to be on track. The Cash Money CEO’s 5 * Stunna debuted at No. 18, selling 86,000 copies with some help from guest artists Young Jeezy, Rick Ross, Fat Joe and surrogate son Lil’ Wayne .
R&B crooner Mario debuted at No. 21 this week with his sophomore effort Go!, which sold 77,000 copies. The disc features spots from Juelz Santana and Rich Boy.
Staten Island collective Wu-Tang Clan aired out their creative differences in the media but managed to debut at No. 25 this week, pushing 68,000 copies of their comeback album, 8 Diagrams.
Def Jam artist The-Dream, best known for penning hits including Rihanna’s “Umbrella” and J. Holiday’s “Bed,” debuted at No. 30 this week with 59,000 copies sold of his solo effort “Love/Hate.”
South Philly rapper Beanie Sigel debuted at No. 37 with his fourth album, The Solution, which moved 49,000 units in its first week out. The disc features guest spots from R. Kelly, Scarface, Ghostface and Styles P.
Actually I was expecting Mario, The Dream and Beanie to move more units and Birdman to drop lower.
